Brains Make More Brains (Introduction)
If you’ve ever sat around wondering what your “true purpose” is in life, here’s a fun slap in the face from biology: your brain evolved to keep you alive long enough to reproduce. That’s it.
Not to make you happy.
Not to help you find inner peace.
Not to let you finally understand why your coworker chews like a feral goat.
Just to survive and make more little humans with their own stingy brains (Barrett, 2020).
Imagine your brain as a factory manager. Its job is to keep the lights on, the machines running, and the products shipping out the door. Whether or not the factory wins “Best Place to Work” or the workers feel fulfilled is irrelevant to the mission. Production is the goal.
This explains so much:
Why rejection and belonging matter so damn much (getting kicked out of the tribe = no mating opportunities) (Baumeister & Leary, 1995).
Why sex sells everything from burgers to car insurance (Barrett, 2020).
Why your brain is always scanning for threats to you and your kids – because if you die, your genes don’t move on (Cosmides & Tooby, 1992).
But let’s expand this even further:
Your brain’s wiring isn’t interested in your self-actualization. Maslow’s pyramid is nice for classroom posters, but from an evolutionary standpoint, your brain is basically screaming “Food, safety, sex, repeat.” You can meditate yourself into oblivion or microdose mushrooms to reach your higher self, and while that’s beautiful, your brain’s core programming still hasn’t changed (Sapolsky, 2017).
That’s why your biology hijacks your best intentions sometimes:
Why you stay in shitty relationships – because alone felt more dangerous to your ancestors than miserable (Buss, 2019).
Why you crave sugar and fat when stressed – because famine was a more common threat than diabetes (Lieberman, 2013).
Why parenting turns your brain into a hypervigilant mess scanning for danger 24/7 – because one saber-toothed tiger could wipe out your entire genetic investment (Hrdy, 2009).
Here’s the kicker:
Just because evolution built your brain for survival and reproduction doesn’t mean that’s all there is to life. Biologically, your purpose was to stay alive long enough to pass on your genes. But meaning? That’s something you get to create yourself.
You can choose to raise kids, nurture others, build art, create community, or just live in a way that feels aligned with who you are. Your brain’s primitive purpose doesn’t cancel out your ability to choose deeper purpose, connection, creativity, or whatever else makes your short time here feel worth it. But it does explain why your brain acts like such a paranoid, budget-conscious asshole sometimes.
So if you’ve ever felt like you’re fighting yourself – trying to “be present,” “find your purpose,” or “manifest your dreams” while your brain is busy yelling about that weird mole on your back or wondering if your window is locked for the tenth time tonight – now you know why. It’s not malfunctioning. It’s doing its job. You just happen to want more out of life than your DNA does.
What’s This Series About?
This is the first in a series of posts where I’m diving into Seven and a Half Lessons About the Brain by Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett – not as some motivational psychology review, but as a brutally honest, sometimes sarcastic breakdown of what your brain actually is and why it does what it does.
Because once you understand that your brain’s job isn’t to think, it’s to keep you alive, everything starts to make a little more sense – including why you can’t just “think your way” out of anxiety, trauma, or existential dread.
